Experience Our Renovation

Even before you set foot in The Westin San Diego Gaslamp Quarter's invigorating new lobby, an incredible sight greets you from just beyond the hotel’s grand porte cochere: the 40-foot tall ‘Flame Flower’, a commanding sculpture that evokes the elemental energy of fire and the flowing movement of sails, birds and wind. This striking artistic creation is just the beginning. We invite you to enter and experience the all-new Westin San Diego Gaslamp Quarter

In June of 2012 The Westin San Diego Gaslamp Quarter completed a $25 million renovation, becoming one of the first Westin hotels to introduce the brand’s new modern design. The hotel now has a distinctly upscale, contemporary feel, inspired by soothing elements of nature like natural wood and stone. The Westin San Diego Gaslamp Quarter recently received a coveted AAA Four Diamond Rating.

Here your every need will be met, your every care attended to. Be our guest and you will leave feeling energized, refreshed, rested and renewed.

Lobby Design
Tastefully decorated in soothing neutral tones with energizing textures such as natural wood and stone, the lobby of The Westin San Diego Gaslamp Quarter is both elegant and inviting. Several signature components include a lush, vertical garden, which not only adds organic beauty but also improves indoor air quality. Guests can relax in thoughtfully designed casual spaces that feature comfortable seating and stylish accents. Active, adaptable spaces are ideal for meetings or browsing the web on our available computers. And customized check-in pods make the guest interactions more personal.

Environmentally conscious elements include LED and CFL lights as well as GreenGuard certified solar shades. The simple, refined style of our rooms creates a tranquil environment that allows you to relax and be at your best.

Key highlights include:

  • Custom Westin-designed accent table that folds to fit a room-service tray or laptop, and folds closed to occupy a smaller space.
  • Expanded Westin closet with shelves, freeing valuable room space and reducing clutter
  • Westin luggage rack that doubles as a bench and is easily stored under the television console, creating additional living area space
  • Heavenly Mirror featuring an illuminated frosted border, allowing light to be softly and evenly diffused

Flame Flower
The Flame Flower is the iconic new sculpture that is displayed in front of the newly remodeled Westin San Diego Gaslamp Quarter hotel for all visitors and local San Diegans to enjoy. Titled ‘Flame Flower’, the 40-foot dynamic sculpture evokes floral grace, the elemental energy of fire and the flowing movement of sails, birds, and wind, which complements the organic nature of the Westin brand.  The sculpture’s asymmetrical design emulates a towering “bouquet” of oversized leaves made from intricately woven stainless steel pieces, creating the ultimate arrival experience for hotel guests. With the hotel’s central location in downtown San Diego and high amount of pedestrian traffic, the sculpture will not only enliven the space for the hotel guests, but for the general public and surrounding downtown community as well.

The petals of ‘Flame Flower’ range in height from 8 to 40 feet.  The vertical composition of the sculpture commands views from all approaches to the plaza, as well as from the conference space and hotel rooms above.

Flame Flower was created by local San Diegan (Fallbrook, CA) Michael Stutz, who has done numerous private and public art projects including Pneumatic Dreamer for the W Hotel in San Francisco, Wolf Plaza for North Carolina State University in Raleigh, and Diaphanous Grove for the San Diego County Regional Library in Fallbrook. He uses organic forms with line and movement to invite viewer interaction with his artwork.. While living in New Orleans in the mid-nineties, Stutz developed his unique and labor-intensive woven technique while building sculptures for the Mardi Gras parades.

Flame Flower takes advantage of the changing light and colors of its surroundings to create an evolving experience for the viewer. Throughout the day, as sunlight passes through the sculptural space, dappled shadows move throughout the plaza to reference time, much like a sundial.  At night, the use of colored LED lights completely transform the space, illuminating the exterior walls surrounding the sculpture, including the hotel’s porte cochere.

New Restaurants

Pinzimini
Pinzimini, a downtown San Diego restaurant, features modern Italian cuisine and is reflected in Chef Joan's culinary creations.

Pin·zi·mi·ni (pin-zuh-MEE-nee): a diminutive version of the word pinzimonio, which describes the Italian dip for vegetables and bread. Our version is high quality olive oil infused with sea salt and fresh herbs, served with crusty bread for dipping.

Executive Chef Joan Kosowski has created a classic menu that showcases signature Tuscan-style entrees, grilled Italian-style sandwiches, salads,  pastas, thin-crust pizzas and an extensive menu of small plates – perfect for sharing and ideal for happy hour.  Guests will discover this downtown San Diego restaurant’s distinctive bread service – crusty bread dipped in the restaurant’s signature high-quality olive oil infused with sea salt and fresh herbs – a tribute to its namesake pinzimonio.
